CLIMATE: CCEE-CEC, APPEAL TO THE CHRISTIANS OF EUROPE, "EFFECTIVE ACTIONS TO FACE THE CHALLENGE"

An invitation to the Christians of Europe and the EU "to take appropriate actions to face the challenge of climate change in the next few weeks": it is contained in the joint letter of the European Conference of the Churches (Cec) and the Council of European Bishops Conferences (Ccee) called "The Churches respond to climate change", published today in the run-up to the UN Climate Conference that will take place in Copenhagen from 7 to 18 December 2009. "Climate change is a problem for all of us. It affects the life of the whole planet", the letter reads. "The developed countries – it goes on – must be in the forefront of this commitment, not least because of their responsibility for the decade-long build-up of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere". This "also drives us to change our everyday lives, as a community and as individuals". The two bodies suggest some effective steps to the Christians of Europe, such as: negotiating with their governments, by taking part in energy-saving initiatives; share initiatives and good practices for "the protection of Creation", as recommended by the III European Ecumenical Assembly of Sibiu (Romania) in 2007.
