BENEDICT XVI: JUBILEE YEAR FOR THE CHURCH IN VIETNAM "A TIME OF GRACE AND RECONCILIATION"

May this be a "time of grace and reconciliation", an occasion to "acknowledge present and past faults against your brothers in faith and your fellow citizens and ask for forgiveness". At the same time, may you "commit yourself to deepening and enriching the ecclesiastical communion so that a more fair and equal society can be established through an authentic dialogue, mutual respect and collaboration", wrote Benedict XVI in his message to Mgr. Pierre Nguyen-Van-Nhon, bishop of Dalat and president of the Vietnamese Bishops’ Conference, on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the establishment of the first two Apostolic Vicariates of Tonchino and Cocincina (1659-2009) in Vietnam. The Vietnamese Church is also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the institution of the Catholic hierarchy in Vietnam (1960-2010). The opening ceremony took place on 24 November, date on which the Church celebrates the memory of the 117 Vietnamese martyrs canonized by John Paul II. (continued). ” ” ” “
