ABUSE OF WOMEN: DE PUIG (PACE), A CONVENTION TO PUT AN END TO IMPUNITY IS URGENTLY NEEDED

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) "remains firmly and powerfully committed to promoting the drawing up of a future Convention of the Council of Europe to prevent and fight the abuse of women, including domestic abuse". This was ensured by Lluís Maria de Puig, president of PACE, a few days before the tenth World Day for the Eradication of Violence against Women, which will be celebrated on November 25th. In these global times, De Puig states, "we mainly take care of migrant women who are abused in their native countries and in the destination countries". For this reason, the Executive Committee submits for examination to the Conference called "Migration and Abuse of Women in Europe", which PACE is promoting with the Inter-Parliamentary Union on December 10th and 11th at the French National Assembly, some possible tools to prevent and fight the domestic abuse, trafficking and forced marriages endured by migrant women. "In Europe, regardless of her origin and background", De Puig points out, any victim of such abuse "must be protected". By adopting a binding legal instrument, "the CoE intends to send a strong message", because, the president of PACE goes on, "impunity must end".” “
