MOTHER GHATTAS BEATA: MGR. AMATO (CAUSES OF SAINTS) "SHE IMPROVED THE WOMEN’S CONDITION IN PALESTINE"

Her "great merit lies in that she improved women’s condition in Palestine through education and learning as well as by founding a religious institution, composed only of local women, for teaching religion and defeating women’s illiteracy. It would not be going too far to say that, through her example and her work, the Virgin gave back to the women of the Holy Land the dignity and nobility they are entitled to have in God’s design". With these words, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, mgr. Angelo Amato, in an interview with SIR (old.agensir.it), speaks of sister Marie-Alphonsine Ghattas, the founder of the Arab Congregation of the Sisters of the Rosary of Jerusalem, who will be beatified in Nazareth on November 22nd. "The one she founded – the archbishop recalls – is, within the Church, the first and so far the only congregation ever founded in the Holy Land. Mother Marie-Alphonsine had a special love for her own land, the land blessed by Jesus and Mary. This beatification is an encouragement for the Catholic community in the Holy Land". One of the most significant traits of the Sister is, according to mgr. Amato, "the surprising humbleness and extraordinary silence that she kept all her life as to her visions of the Virgin and the foundation of the Congregation. Because of her visions, she is a sort of Arab Bernadette Soubirou".” “
