(Brussels) A document on the promotion of religious freedom in the policies of the European Union. This will be published in a few months’ time by the Bishops of Comece. The announcement was made by the president of Comece, mgr. Adrianus Van Luyn, as he presented the final press release of the plenary assembly which ended in Brussels today. Van Luyn stated that "religious freedom is a fundamental right that for years Comece has committed itself to promoting" and that is why "we welcome the EU Council’s adoption, on November 16th, of the resolution that confirms the EU’s intention to give priority to such subjects as freedom of religion or faith as part of the European Human Rights policies", especially in bilateral or multilateral relations. Rejoicing for the enforcement of the Lisbon Treaty, mgr. Van Luyn also pointed out that, "under article 1 the EU acknowledges the identity and specific contribution of the Churches and will condict a dialogue with them on such grounds. Comece the archbishop concluded , relying on the fruitful dialogue already started with the EU institutions, is now committing itself to intensifying it".
