EU PARLIAMENT: "MOSCOW SHOULD PUNISH THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MURDERS OF POLITKOVSKAYA AND HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS"

(Brussels) Ensuring that those responsible for the murders of human rights defenders are brought before justice and that the "judicial system is not used as a political instrument" – these are the main conditions established by the European Parliament to pursue the EU-Russia partnership. At its plenary session, the Assembly approved a resolution in which the Council and the Commission are called to develop a "pragmatic partnership" with Moscow, provided that "the new agreement deals not only with economic issues, but also with human rights". The text approved by a wide majority includes a reference to the fact that the EU Parliament awarded its Sakharov Prize 2009 to Memorial, an organization committed to the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms in former Soviet Union countries. The document also mentions the names of those people "assassinated" under mysterious circumstances in the last few years who have never received justice: Anna Politkovskaya, Natalia Estemirova, Andrei Kulagin, Zarema Sadulayeva, Alik Dzhabrailov, Maksharip Aushev, Stanislav Markelov, Anastasiya Baburova. It also condemns the "brutal assassination" of Maksharip Aushev, an "opposition figure shot dead in Ingushetia".” ” ” “
