LISBON TREATY: BARROSO (EU COMMISSION), "ITALY, UNFAILING SUPPORT TO THE EUROPEAN PROJECT"

"I would like to congratulate Italy on the decision with which Parliament approved the Lisbon Treaty today". José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, is the EU’s first voice to express satisfaction for the unanimous vote with which the House of Deputies has given the final go-ahead to the Reform Treaty after the Senate’s approval. "I had the pleasure to take part in the recent debate on the Treaty at the Italian Senate – states Barroso -. As the bodies of one of the founding countries, both the Italian Government and a wide political spectrum within Parliament have proven to give unfailing support to the European project and the ratification" of the Treaty. "I am pleased – concludes the head of the EU Executive – that the national governments are moving on with the ratification process so that all the member states will be heard within such process". After the Italian ratification, the number of countries which have ratified the Treaty are now 24: now the approvals of the Czech Republic and Sweden are the only missing ones, while Ireland rejected the Treaty through a public referendum.
