EU: BARROSO AND JANEZ, "FROM THE CHURCHES, A CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEFENCE OF THE ENVIRONMENT"

"Climate change forces everyone to urgently take action; each component of society must contribute to guaranteeing a sustainable future for the planet. Because of the extent of their influence and the role they play in our societies, religions and communities of faith are in an ideal position to make an effective contribution to stirring people for a sustainable future": José Manuel Barroso, president of the Commission that hosted the meeting between the EU and the churches, speaks about one of the items on the agenda, explaining that climate change is an "ethical challenge for all cultures". On his part, the president of the Council of the 27 member states, Janez Jansa, adds: "The environment has not only a natural dimension, but also a sacredness to it. The concept of community and loyalty between man, nature and the Maker is equally inherent in Judaism, Christianity and Islam". According to Jansa, "climate change forces us to change the forms in which imagination, spontaneity and entrepreneurship are to be channelled to create a world that will no longer be dependent on fossil fuels". This does not mean "we must surrender our breakthroughs, only that we have to reconsider them and look at them from a new standpoint".” “
