BENEDICT XVI: TO THE ITALIAN BISHOPS, "A TRUE EDUCATIONAL EMERGENCY IS GOING ON"

"A true educational emergency" is going on in Italy. This is the powerful phrase about young people that opened the speech which Pope Benedict XVI made this morning to the Italian Bishops, gathered from 26 to 30 May in the Vatican for their 58th General Assembly. "When – said the Pope – in a society and in a culture that are affected by an all-pervading, often aggressive relativism, the basic certainties, the values and hopes that make sense of life seem to disappear, the temptation to give up can easily spread among parents as well as among teachers". "So – went on the Pope –, children, teenagers and young people, even if surrounded by lots of attention and maybe even too sheltered from the ordeals and difficulties of life, eventually feel as if they were left alone before the big questions that inevitably are born inside them as well as before the expectations and challenges that they feel to be impending over their future".
