"Ukraine deeply appreciates the Pope’s commitment to promoting the respect of universal values and peace all over the world". This is a passage from the President’s release, relayed today by the Catholic press agency Risu, after the meeting between the Vatican Secretary of State, card. Tarcisio Bertone, and president Victor Yushchenko, on May 25th. According to the release, during the meeting the president conferred upon the Vatican Secretary of State the honour of the "Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise" "for his personal contribution to the spreading of peace, justice and human rights". Then, president Yushchenko sent an invitation to the Pope to visit Ukraine. On its part, the Vatican delegation expressed its appreciation for the efforts that the country is making to improve inter-confessional relations. The cardinal too invited the president of Ukraine to come on an official visit to the Vatican this year. The Vatican secretary of State’s journey in Ukraine began on May 21st and ended yesterday.
