EU AND MEDITERRANEAN: THE COMMISSION’S PLANS TO REVIVE THE PARTNERSHIP (2)

"This is an essential turning point for the EU and for our Mediterranean partners", stated José Manuel Barroso, head of the EU Commission, as he presented the report on the future of the Barcelona Process. "It turned out to be precious for building bridges between the Mediterranean partners. The impulse given by the next French Presidency of the EU will enhance and integrate such key cooperation tool, provided both sides of the Mediterranean show a stronger political resolve, so as to seize this opportunity to strengthen agreement, peace and prosperity for our populations". According to the EU Executive, "in order to carry out such plans, we will have to invest additional funds, on top of the traditional budget allocations". Benita Ferrero-Waldner, commissioner for the neighbourhood policy, added: "There are those who support the Barcelona Process and there are those who criticise it, instead. While we appreciate that a lot has been done in nearly 13 years of partnership, we are well aware that more progress will have to be done for the future developments not to fail short of expectations". ” ” ” “
