EU: THE EUROPEAN MARITIME DAY WAS ESTABLISHED. BARROSO (COMMISSION), "A RESOURCE FOR THE WHOLE UNION"

"The Sea, its sectors and maritime resources are the essential elements for the prosperity and wellness of Europe". The president of the Commission, José Manuel Barroso, explained the meaning of today’s decision to establish the European Maritime Day, which is going to be celebrated on 20th May every year from now on. "As Europeans, we wish to emphasize such reality – added Barroso -, and to sensitize the people on the opportunities offered by the maritime sector and our new maritime integrated policy". An official ceremony will take place in Strasbourg, alongside the session of the European parliament, in which the president of the Commission, the president of the Council, Janez Jansa, and of the Assembly, Hans-Gert Poettering, will sign a joint declaration. "The European Maritime Day will be the occasion to illustrate the crucial role of seas and oceans in the daily life of coast communities as well as of all the citizens of the European Union. Their importance for sustainable growth and employment in Europe will be emphasized". Exactly on 20th May, the European Parliament will pronounce on a report on the maritime policy of the 27 member countries.
