MIGRATION: CARD. MARTINO, FOR A UNITED FAMILY EVEN IN MOBILITY

"We must strive for the family, the vital cell of every society, to be able to live united even in mobility and, when this is not feasible, for it to find a community or a place in which to experience a family atmosphere". This was said by card. Renato Raffaele Martino, president of the Papal Council for Migrants and Travellers, as he opened, in the Vatican today, the plenary meeting of his ministry about "The migrant and travelling family", due to end on Thursday with an audience with Pope Benedict XVI. According to the cardinal, the family "is one of the driving factors behind people’s mobility. One migrates to find better living conditions; one escapes – he said – to find shelter in hospitable lands; one moves to study abroad, one also goes on a holiday to strengthen one’s family bonds, one works at sea or in civil aviation to support one’s beloved ones. Then there are several circumstances for the family in connection with the street: in the walk of pilgrimage, in ‘nomadic life’ by culture and tradition, in the roads as users, in the sad exploitation of prostitution, in the search for a house for the homeless and foster care for many children".
