EARTHQUAKE IN CHINA: CATHOLICS COUNT CASUALTIES AND DAMAGES. AIDS AND PRAYERS FROM THE OTHER DIOCESES (2)

In the meantime, prayers and appeals to solidarity come from all over China: the diocese of Shanghai donated 1 million yuan (142,989 US dollars) and bishop Aloysius Jin Luxian invited all the priests to celebrate Mass with special prayers for the victims and the survivors, while raising funds for the earthquake victims. Even mgr. Joseph Wei Jingyi of Qiqihar, in the province of Heilongjiang (north-east China), wrote and sent out a prayer for the occasion. In southern China, in the diocese of Jiangmen, appeals were made to all Catholics to give money, clothes, tents through the government offices and other charity organisations. According to the Chinese Red Cross (Rcsc), there is an urgent need for tents, blankets, indispensable foodstuffs, drinking water, medicines and disinfectants. From its website www.redcross.org.cn, it is making appeals to raise funds. In the meantime, the government first-aid machine is fighting against bad weather and broken-down communications. Today, the deputy governor of Sichuan, Li Chengun, sent an updated but incomplete balance of approximately 12,000 casualties, with 26,000 injured people and 9,400 people still trapped under the rubble.
