HOLY SEE: CARD. CAÑIZARES LLOVERA IS THE NEW PREFECT OF THE CONGREGATION FOR THE DIVINE CULT

The Holy Father accepted the resignation submitted by card. Francis Arinze, having reached retirement age, from his appointment as prefect of the Congregation for the Divine Cult and the Discipline of Sacraments and called to replace him, in the same post, card. Antonio Cañizares Llovera, so far the archbishop of Toledo (Spain). Card. Arinze was born in Eziowelle, a town in the archdiocese of Onitsha, Nigeria, on November 1st 1932. He was ordained priest in Rome on November 23rd 1958. On July 6th 1965, he was appointed to the Titular See of Fissiana and appointed bishop coadjutor of the archbishop of Onitsha, whom he replaced two years later; on June 26th 1967, he was appointed archbishop. Made cardinal, he had been president of the Papal Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue from May 27th 1985 to October 1st 2002, when John Paul II appointed him prefect of the Congregation for the Divine Cult and the Discipline of Sacraments. Card. Cañizares Llovera was born in Utiel, archdiocese of Valencia, on October 15th 1945. Ordained priest on June 21st 1970, he was appointed by John Paul II bishop of Ávila on March 6th 1992. On December 10th 1996, he was appointed archbishop of Granada. On October 24th 2002, John Paul II appointed him metropolitan archbishop of Toledo and primate of Spain.
