ALEXIUS II: COLIN WILLIAMS (KEK), "WE ARE GRATEFUL TO HIM FOR HIS CONTRIBUTION"

Gratefulness from the Conference of European Churches, organization gathering the Protestant, Anglican and Orthodox Churches of Europe, for the work carried out by Patriarch Alexius II within them: it was expressed by the secretary general of KEK, Reverend Colin Williams. He said: "The great value which Patriarch Alexius II has given to the work of KEK has always been clear. While we are approaching the 50th anniversary of the Conference of European Churches, we are grateful to Alexius II for the role he played in the construction of KEK as an effective and ecumenical instrument, both in the years of his presidencies and as Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church". Ever since 1964, Patriarch Alexius II has been a member of KEK Presidium. In 1972, he became vice president, and in 1987 he was elected president. That office lasted until 1992. In 1989, together with Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, he was co-president of the First European Ecumenical Assembly of Basel.
