COMECE: MEETING IN GDANSK ON "SOLIDARITY AS EU FOUNDING VALUE" IN OCTOBER 2009

"Solidarity as a founding value of the EU" is the theme of the meeting which is going to be held in Gdansk (Poland) in October 2009 on the initiative of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community (COMECE). About 500 Catholics from all over Europe are due to meet in the founding city of Solidarnošæ. The news is announced by COMECE the day after the first preparatory meeting which was held yesterday in Brussels under the chairmanship of Mgr Piotr Jarecki, COMECE Vice-President. "Twenty years after the fall of the Communist regime and 70 years since the start of World War II," reads a statement "the European Union, just at a time when the economic crisis deepens, is today faced with a great duty: to practice solidarity within the Member States and towards the other regions of the world." Therefore the meeting in Gdansk, decided by COMECE plenary assembly in November, has the aim of "promoting Catholic social teaching at the level of European unification." Among the members of the preparation Committee, the bishops from France, Italy, Poland, Slovenia and Spain, as well as representatives of several Catholic lay organisations, the European network ‘Justice and Peace’ and COMECE secretary, for a total of 18 different Member States. Next preparatory meeting has been fixed for mid-February 2009. ” ” ” ” ” “
