ITALY: TOMORROW THE CATHOLIC NEWSPAPER "AVVENIRE" TURNS 40

Tomorrow will be the 40th anniversary of the birth of the newspaper "Avvenire". For the occasion, card. Dionigi Tettamanzi, archbishop of Milan, will co-celebrate Mass with mgr. Marcello Semeraro, bishop of Albano and president of the Board of Governors of the newspaper, in Milan’s basilica of Sant’Ambrogio (4 December, 5 pm). The birth of "Avvenire", said a few days ago mgr. Mariano Crociata, secretary general of the Italian Bishops Conference, "was born of a pastoral idea", which drives those who work there to "recognise God as He works in history". The style must be "that of perfume, which reaches and conquers one by pervasion and attraction", always asking oneself "what our words are born of and what they lead to". A mission, this one, that was also mentioned by the editor in chief of "Avvenire", Dino Boffo, who thinks the lead-line of some foundations "leaves us amazed about the birth of our newspaper, despite everything: an amazement that today cannot help arousing awareness and responsibility in this well-integrated, young editorial staff who believe in what they do".
"Avvenire", which was strongly wanted by Paul VI, was born on December 4th 1968 as a shared cultural medium for the Catholics of our country.
Tomorrow, on the occasion of its 40th anniversary, the new website of the Catholic title will be online (www.avvenire.it).
