BENEDICT XVI: TO THE ROMAN CURIA, "THE EARTH HAS AN ETHICAL DIRECTION"

"The fact that the matter carries along a mathematical structure, is full of spirit, is the foundation which the modern sciences of nature rest on. Only because the matter is intelligently structured can our spirit interpret it and proactively shape it. The fact this intelligent structure comes from the same Making Spirit that has also donated the spirit to us involves a task as well as a responsibility": this was said by the Pope in the second part of the speech he gave this morning to the Roman Curia. "In the faith about the Creation lies the foundation of our responsibility for the earth – he added –. It is not merely our property that we can exploit according to our interests and wishes. It is rather a gift of the Maker, who designed its intrinsic structures and with this gave us the directions we have to abide by, as the administrators of His Creation. The fact that the earth, the cosmos, reflect the Making Spirit also means that their rational structures, which, beyond the mathematical order, in the experiment, become almost palpable, carry along an ethical direction too". Then, Benedict XVI added that "the Spirit that moulded them is more than mathematics –. It is the very Goodness that, through the language of Creation, shows us the way of the right life".
