HUMAN RIGHTS: BONNER (SAKHAROV’S WIDOW), "NEVER MAKE ANY EXCEPTIONS" TO THE RESPECT OF DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM

” “"One can never make any concessions or exceptions to the respect of human rights, because they are the basis for the future of the world and our civilisations". Elena Bonner, Andrej Sakharov’s widow, is in Strasbourg for the award to freedom, which this year the European Parliament gave to Chinese dissident Hu Jia. "Human rights are violated in many countries, and they are not always adequately supported in Europe either". In her speech to the MEPs and then as she met the press, Bonner advocated the cause of "all the people and organisations that defend the fundamental rights"; then, she denounced the violations of democracy and freedom in China, in Turkey (the Kurdish population) and even in her country. "The situation in Russia is appalling" in terms of democracy, denounced the guest, who then added: "Russians and Chinese have chosen the wrong way. The human-faced capitalism" they propose "is impossible in the authoritarian regimes. Economic freedoms, without political and personal freedoms, lead to nothing". Finally, Bonner invited Parliament to "work harder" for the protection of rights in Europe and in the world.
