HUMAN RIGHTS: "A RALLY FOR FREEDOM", WITH EUROPEAN NGOs IN STRASBOURG

"A Rally for Freedom and Human Rights in China": this is the name of the event promoted in Strasbourg by several Non-Governmental Organisations working across the world in human rights and fundamental freedoms, to highlight "the importance of giving the Sakharov Award to Chinese dissident Hu Jia", which will take place today. The winner will not be there as he is currently imprisoned in his country: because of this, a sit-in protest and a walk will be held outside the building of the European Parliament in the presence of the Rumanian bishop Laszlo Tokes, "one of the first to break the wall of silence in communist Romania", Istvan Szent-Ivanyi, a Hungarian dissident, and Helga Trupel, a German MEP who has just visited Hu Jia’s family as a sign of Europe’s sympathy. "This Award – explain the promoters of the rally – encourages the defenders of human rights in China to continue their journey towards freedom; free thinking, freedom of belief, of expression and information". The initiative is supported by German, Belgian, English, Northern and French NGOs.
