A cartoon to tell what it means being citizens "of the" and "in the" European Union. The initiative has been launched by the EU Commission and is contest for the students of art and graphics schools aged 16 or more who are EU citizens or are permanent residents of the EU. Students are invited "to draw a cartoon on one single page, without words, illustrating the concept of participation in social life in the EU". "The purpose of the contest explained Commissioner Jacques Barrot is to enable all these young people to express themselves about their experience of civil life". "Anyone who questions oneself on the concept of citizenship in Europe he adds reaches the very prerequisite of one’s life within the EU". The expiry date for submission of the works is February 27th 2009. Entrants will be selected nationwide, then they will undergo a Europe-wide selection; the awards ceremony will be in Brussels from May 9th to 11th. The winner will receive 6 thousand euros, the second place will win 4 thousand euros, and the third place will win 2 thousand euros.
