"There’s no time to waste": the Belgian Louis Michel, European Commissioner for humanitarian aids, repeats the EU’s alarm regarding the fight against the spreading of Aids. On the day that all the world has dedicated to this disease, he states that "Aids and Hiv are two of the major obstacles to the development of many poor countries" and highlights the case of Africa. Michel recalls that the EU is the main donor of the World Fund for the fight against the disease, and that the three years 2008-2010 have already budgeted another 300 millions’ worth of investments, plus the 622 billion euros that have been allocated in the last 5 years. On her side, Cypriot Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou explains that "we must insist on the threat that Aids is, and act especially in the preventative area", at least until "effective vaccines and remedies are discovered". Vassiliou adds that "every year two million people die of Aids in the world, and in Europe alone over 700 thousand people live with the virus and 30 thousand new infections are notified every year". The MEPs do not enter into the details of preventative methods but insist on the actions funded by the EU in this sphere, inside and outside the boundaries of the EU, and announce that a new EU "strategy" will be issued in Autumn 2009.
