"Now the door is open for the EU’s taking in 10 thousand particularly vulnerable Iraqi refugees: now the member states have the resources to act quickly". The secretary general of the Council of the EU’s Bishops Commissions (Comece), Piotr Mazurkiewicz, says he is satisfied about the conclusions drawn by the Justice and Internal Affairs Council, which a few days ago, from Brussels, invited the member states to take in Iraqi refugees especially those who are in Syria and Jordan who are in a particularly vulnerable condition, such as those who need special health care, victims of traumas or tortures, members of religious minorities, single mothers with dependant family members. In addition, the Council highlighted that returns might be funded by the European Fund for the Refugees, and recalled that the member states have until December 19th 2008 to state what their intentions are, for calculating the sharing of the 2009 funding.
