(Simona Mengascini, SIR’s correspondent in Cyprus) – "We have so many things in common, and the road we have travelled together is amazing": there is no doubt for card. Walter Kasper, president of the Papal Council for the Promotion of the Unity of Christians, who was at the Rimini Meeting today, speaking of the progress made in the ecumenical sphere by the Christian Churches. A belief, his, that he partly acquired from a document on the reception of the Joint Statement on the Justification of 1999, that will be submitted in December. Kasper explained that the ecumenical movement was essential "to work for peace" and, especially in Europe, that first experienced the split from the Orthodox Church and then the Protestant Reform, "no full unity can be attained without ecumenism". "We are called to Christian unity, because this will give credibility to our message – he added –, but reconciliation has a political value as well, because it shows that the wounds and difficulties of history can be overcome". The cardinal pointed out that ecumenism is not just the "production of documents", but a process that has an impact on "life" through "friendship", "mutual love" and the "building of bonds".
