ITALY: RELIGIOUS FREEDOM; GUARANTEEING "FULL RESPECT" "WITHOUT ALTERING" THE CONSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK

” “"The guarantee of the fundamental right of religious freedom in all its dimensions, not least the specifically institutional one, is a prerequisite for a peaceful cohabitation and for a correct laicism". This was said by mgr. Giuseppe Betori, secretary general of the Italian Bishops Conference (Cei), during a hearing about the subjects of religious freedom, which took place today at the I Permanent Commission for Constitutional Affairs of the Chamber of Deputies. As to the "reforming design" that is being examined in this respect, Betori highlighted "the need, for the catholic Church, to guarantee the full respect of religious freedom" as well as "the need not to alter the constituent character of the constitutional system that regulates the religious phenomenon, under which the right to religious freedom is specifically set forth and guaranteed in all its forms". "The equal freedom of all religious confessions – highlighted the secretary general of the Italian Bishops Conference, on quoting article 8 of the Constitution – does not imply a fully equal treatment", since, "outside the rights associated with equal freedom (right of worship, religious propaganda, organisation of communities), different legal disciplines are still possible".” “
