HOLY LAND: EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN BISHOPS, AN APPEAL FOR THE PILGRIMS TO COME BACK (3)

” “The future of the peoples of the Holy Land passes through a fair, lasting peace. For the Bishops, it is important "to build confidence": "the establishment of a Palestinian State, which would put a stop to occupation, requires adjoining lands and questions the building of the Israeli separation barrier and the expansion of the settlements in Cis-Jordan. The Palestinians need to move freely, in order to work, visit their relatives, go to school or receive treatment. All humiliations at the check-points and at the frontiers must be eradicated, and family reunions must be eased". But it is up to the Palestinians to "reach agreement between the different parties, so as to negotiate a fair peace. Eradicating violence and acknowledging the State of Israel will help – according to the Bishops – rebuild confidence and boost the contribution of the international community to the Palestinian Authority". In this connection, the Bishops are in favour of a forthcoming meeting between the US Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice, and prime ministers Olmert and Abbas.” “
