EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT: THE 53 BULGARIAN AND RUMANIAN MEPs WELCOMED "WITH JOY AND EMOTION". THE NEW PRESIDENT ELECTED TODAY

” “"It is with joy and emotion that today we welcome our 53 new Bulgarian and Rumanian colleagues": yesterday, the European Parliament, gathered in Strasbourg this week for its plenary meeting, proceeded to install the MEPs from Bucharest and Sofia. The outgoing president of the Assembly, the Spanish Josep Borrell, gave a brief speech about democracy and European integration. Today, the EU Parliament, that now has 785 members from 27 countries and 177 parties, will appoint the new president and 14 deputy presidents. Borrell highlighted the main events of the mid-term (2004-2009), lingered on "the increasing role and influence of Parliament on the European and international scene" and made an "appeal for the revival of the building of Europe". "To strengthen its legitimacy – he specified –, Europe needs to deliver results through good policies, developed by strong and effective institutions"; for instance, "Parliament, the symbol of representative democracy and the embryo of supranational democracy" will have to "play a key role in the revival" of integration, 50 years after the Treaties that established the EEC.” “
