” “"The European Commission supports the principles, the value and the substance of the Constitutional Treaty": it was repeated today by the head of the EU Executive, José Manuel Barroso, at the end of his meeting in Rome with the Italian prime minister Romano Prodi. Barroso, who is on an official visit in Italy these days, had a series of meetings with the highest authorities, including the President of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano; in addition, he has been awarded an honorary degree in Economics from Università La Sapienza. The head of the commission explained some of the fixed points of his policy, confirming, in agreement with the Italian Government, that "negotiations with Turkey are going on", even if they "are time consuming and complicated". The celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the treaties which established the EEC, signed in Rome on 25th March 1957, will have to "help to look to the future, not just to celebrate the past", since "the European project needs to be revived". During the meeting with Prodi, he spoke of international trade agreements (Doha), energy issues, the relations between the EU and China and India. Right now, Rome is also hosting the visit of the Accession Commissioner, Olli Rehn, who is going to attend a conference organised by the Minister of Foreign Affairs about the "European prospects of the Western Balkans".” “
