BENEDICT XVI AT THE ANGELUS: "THE MIGRANT FAMILY, A RESOURCE FOR THE WALK OF HUMANKIND

"We can look at the Holy Family of Nazareth, the icon of all families, because it mirrors the likeness of God, treasured in the heart of every human family, even when it is weakened and sometimes scarred by the tribulations of life". It was said yesterday morning by Benedict XVI before introducing the Angelus, on the occasion of the World Day of Migrants and Refugees. "In the tragedy of the Family of Nazareth – added the Pope – we get a glance of the painful condition of so many migrants, especially the refugees, the exiles, the evacuees, the evicted, the persecuted. In particular, we recognise the difficulties of the migrant family as such: the distress, the humiliations, the difficulties, the fragility". In fact, recalled the Holy Father, "the phenomenon of human mobility is an extremely far-ranging one". According to some recent estimates of the United Nations, people who migrate for economic reasons are now nearly 200 million, refugees are about 9 million and international students are approximately 2 million. Add to this number the domestic evacuees and the irregulars. "It is important – said the Pope – to protect the migrants and their families through the aid of specific legal, juridical and administrative systems, as well as through a network of services, reception points and social and pastoral assistance facilities".
