PORTUGAL: THE POPE WILL NOT GO TO FATIMA IN OCTOBER FOR THE 90TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE APPARITIONS

” “Benedict XVI will not go to Fatima in October 2007 to attend the closing ceremony of the celebrations for the 90th anniversary of the apparitions of the Virgin to the three little shepherds. This was announced – as reported by the Portuguese Catholic agency Ecclesia – by the secretary of the Portuguese Bishops Conference (Cep), father Carlos Azevedo, at the end of the meeting of the Permanent Council, in acknowledgement of a release from the Secretariat of State of the Holy See. Benedict XVI had been invited by the Portuguese Bishops a few months ago. The reason put forward by the Papal office is the "excessive number of previous engagements”, which forced Benedict XVI to reduce his trips. However, the Pope wanted to confirm that he will send a legate to Fatima for the October celebrations and expressed his wish and intention to go to Fatima on some later occasion. In addition, the October celebrations will include the opening of a new church dedicated to the Most Holy Trinity.” “
