An “exciting” pontificate: in the view of Father Umberto Baratto, Latin vicar of Nicosia (Cyprus) the twenty-five years of John Paul II’s pontificate have been unforgettable. “We cannot forget declares Father Baratto the constant appeals to forgiveness, peace and reconciliation. And for us who live in a divided country [partitioned between Turkey and Greece] these appeals represent a witness of a living faith which give us the strength to continue our path”. “Through his physical suffering adds Baratto the depth of spirit that accompanies it emerges even more clearly. And it was moving to see so many faithful, together with the apostolic Nuncio, Msgr. Pietro Sambi, participate in the mass celebrated here in Nicosia, to commemorate this 25th anniversary”.
