Georgia: attacks on the minority Christian communities” “

The World Council of Churches has sent a letter to the President of Georgia, Eduard Shevardnadze, asking that disciplinary measures be immediately taken again those responsible for “violently attacking the Baptist church in Tiblisi during a meeting promoted during the Prayer Week for Christian Unity on 24 January”. “Our appeal – says the letter – is reinforced by the fact that this is not the first time that representatives of the minority Churches have been attacked by extremist groups”. The impunity with which such actions are committed – comments the WCC – “make interconfessional relations more precarious and have a negative impact on the reputation of Georgia as an independent State”. “The World Council of Churches – concludes the letter – will continue to encourage every effort aimed at promoting religious toleration and mutual understanding between the religious and ethnic communities, in this period of uncertainty and insecurity that the whole region of the Caucasus is going through”.
