BENEDICT XVI: ANGELUS, “PROMOTING RECONCILIATION AND PEACE” IN THE OLYMPIC SPIRIT

“In just a few days, London will host the 30th edition of the Olympic Games”, Benedict XVI recalled after the Angelus in Castel Gandolfo yesterday morning. “With athletes from many countries participating – he said -, the Olympic Games are the biggest sporting event in the world and have a strong symbolic value. This is why the Catholic Church shows her warm support and attention” to this event. Hence the invitation to pray “that according to God’s will, the London Games may be a true experience of fraternity among the world’s peoples”. The Olympic Games was also the focus of Pope Benedict XVI’s greetings in English: “I send greetings to the organizers, athletes and spectators alike, and I pray that, in the spirit of the Olympic Truce, the good will generated by this international sporting event may bear fruit, promoting peace and reconciliation throughout the world”. Upon all those attending the London Olympic Games, the Holy Father invoked “the abundant blessings of Almighty God”.
