UKRAINE: ROMAN CATHOLICS CELEBRATE THE 600TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LVIV METROPOLITANATE
(SIR Europe – Bratislava) - Holy mass on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of transfer of the seat of the Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church (RCC) from Halych to Lviv was held on 1 February. It was presided by the apostolic nuncio in Ukraine, archbishop Thomas Edward Gullickson who made his first official visit to the Roman Catholic community of Lviv. According to the Religious Information Service of Ukraine, the mass was concelebrated by the head of the RCC, archbishop Mieczyslav Mokrzytski; the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk and other bishops and priests from Ukraine and Poland, in presence of the representatives of civil authorities of the Lviv region. The mass marked the beginning of the Jubilee year of the RCC in Ukraine, with the main aim to renew efforts in bringing Jesus to the world, as was emphasized by archbishop Mokrzytski in the homily.
