10:49 - EU PARLIAMENT: PLENARY SESSION TO DEBATE WOMENS RIGHTS IN TURKEY
(SIR Europe - Strasbourg) - Violence against women is one of the most pressing problems in Turkey, where two or three women are killed by their husbands, fiancés, relatives or former husbands every day. The current legislation (law no. 4320) is defective. The plenary session of the European Parliament (21-24 May) opens with a report on the situation of women in Turkey, a country due to join the EU. The text drawn up by Dutch MEP Emine Bozkurt and launched by the {FEMM}Committee on Womens Rights and Gender equality faces several aspects of the problem (rights, education, participation in the work market, political participation); positive aspects are also pointed out in the grounds of the text, including growing awareness of the Turkish society with respect to violence against women. The question is daily dealt with in Turkish newspapers, TV programmes, and several NPOs. The government has already acknowledged the existence of a serious problem, and it no longer talks about gender violence in terms of isolated episodes. In the attempt of eliminating violence against women, the relevant ministries are also training the police, judges and public prosecutors, health staff and religious in respect of their roles in the fight against gender violence.
