10:42 - GERMANY: BISHOPS’ CONFERENCE CONGRATULATES NEW PRESIDENT JOACHIM GAUCK

In a press statement released yesterday, the president of the German Bishops’ Conference Mgr. Robert Zollitsch congratulated Joachim Gauck on his election as the new president of the German Federal Republic. His “genuine commitment to freedom and civil responsibility” as well as his “popularity among the people” are, according to Mgr. Zollitsch, “great assets” which will help him “take on the office of President in a difficult moment”. “Your Christian background and your work in the Evangelical Church”, Mgr. Zollitsch said addressing Mr Gauck, “your fight for freedom and particularly your valuable work of investigation in the archives of the Stasi of former Eastern Germany are among your greatest human and professional achievements”. In the statement, the head of the German Catholic Church also stressed the excellent relations that have always existed between the highest office of the State and the Catholic Church, which, he said, “feels the need to cooperate for the well-being of our State”. The Bishops’ Conference, Mgr. Zollitsch concluded, “wants to take part in the current debate, even critically should it be necessary”.
