NIGERIAN BISHOPS: “GOVERNMENT TO ACT NOW TO PUT AN END TO VIOLENCE”

[<< INDIETRO] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

A call to the Nigerian Government, that it may ensure “security of life and property of citizens all over the nation”, and to the Muslim community, that it may take ”concrete” action with “those responsible andmake them desist from causing any further havoc on our nation in the name of religion”. This is the statement issued today by the Nigerian bishops about the security situation in their country, in which they speak of “palpable danger in the air”. The bishops call the government to take action to put an end to the wave of violence unleashed in several areas of the country by the Islamic cult Boko Haram, which attacked lots of Christians. “These are sad days for Nigeria and for all Nigerians – mgr. Ignatius Kaigama, archbishop of Jos and president of the Nigerian Bishops Conference, and mgr. Alfred Martins, new archbishop of Lagos, write –. We feel greatly pained by the violent events which have become almost daily occurrences. Time is rolling on and the situation of insecurity in the land has not improved in any significant way. On the contrary, it seems to be going from bad to worse, as terrorists strike almost at will against innocent citizens all across the northern parts of Nigeria”. “It is a primary duty of government – they point out – to ensure security of life and property of citizens all over the nation. There can be no excuse for failure in this primary duty”. (continued)
