(Sir Europe – Brussels) – “At this stage, the most important problem for both the EU and its member states is undoubtedly the economic and financial crisis, as well as its impact on the future of the European Union”. Based on such acknowledgement, the Greek jurist Nikiforos Diamandouros, in his capacity as the European Ombudsman, explains the initiative taking place in the EU premises in Brussels, on 24th April. It is about a conference called “Europe in crisis: the challenges to be won, the citizens’ trust”, with speeches from the president of the EU Assembly, the German Martin Schulz, the president of the EU Commission, the Portuguese José Manuel Barroso, and the Danish Prime Minister, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, currently the president of the EU Council of Ministers. The citizens will be able to view the event on the EU Parliament’s website (www.europarl.europa.eu[>>]), the Ombudsman’s website (www.ombudsman.europa.eu[>>]), or they can ask questions to the speakers on Twitter (all details available online). Diamandouros adds: “In lots of member states, citizens are not just losing confidence in their national governments, they are also becoming more and more sceptic about the EU’s ability to find solutions to the crisis, the worst in its history. Tomorrow’s event will offer an opportunity to engage in a wide discussion about all these topics”.
