Anthropological mistakes are committed again, and the assertion of human freedom and the respect of the fundamental human rights are the focus of attention again”. These are the “new challenges” that the Church has to face. It was recalled today in Zagreb, Croatia, by card. Josip Bozaniæ, metropolitan archbishop of Zagreb and deputy president of the Council of European Bishops Conferences (Ccee), as he opened the meeting of the cardinals and presidents of the Bishops Conferences of the Central-Oriental European countries, on “The mission of the Church in Central-Oriental Europe, twenty years after the collapse of the communist system (1989-2009)”. A double anniversary, the one the participants celebrated: on one side, the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which marked the end of communism; on the other side, the tenth anniversary of the beatification of the cardinal archbishop of Zagreb, Alojzije Stepinac, a martyr of the communist regime.
