“Business can play a vital role and produce ‘social wealth’ if business people and managers are guided by a far-sighted vision, one that prefers long-term investment to speculative profit, and that promotes innovation rather than thinking only to accumulate wealth”. This is the appeal made by the Pope to the Roman entrepreneurs received in audience today in the Clementine Hall. According to Benedict XVI, “the life of a company depends on its attention to all the subjects with which it has relations, on the ethical value of its project, and on its activity”. The Pontiff believes that “the crisis itself has shown that in a market beset by waves of bankruptcies, the economic actors who survived are those who were able to follow moral behaviours and were attentive to the needs of their area”. “The success of the Italian business, especially in some regions, has always been a consequence of the importance given to the network of relations, based on collaboration and mutual trust, that companies were able to establish with workers and other business realities”.
